Rodrick Freeman aka “Rod-zilla the Blackademic” has been a staple in the California spoken word scene for the last 5 years. His dynamic performances have graced stages from LA to Maine, heralded as the “hip hop griot”, Rod-zilla stuns crowds with his creative natural realism, an abundance of alliteration, and a delivery that’s as unforgettable as Nat Cole.

Representing the New Black Arts movements this Blackademic has made it his duty to kill popular Black male stereotype with his scholarly work, showing that the myth of the Black intellectual is not a farce at all. Equipped with knowledge of self, and African conviction Mr. Freeman has set out to be in the vanguard of progressive thinking, positive action, and edutainment to the highest degree. His prolific body of work, details the need for economic freedom and development in our communities, the need for Black accountability but not sparing venomous critiques on the powers that be.

African for the Africans

On his first body of work you will find a young Black man who is fed up, fed up with the state of the black family, prison industrial complex, mental health, and educational institutions. You will find a searching student who basks in the Pan-Africanist ray of light, a self proclaimed new age Garveyite, who wants to evoke a pulse in an otherwise flat lined nation. You

Oh shit! this is one of the greatest albulms i've ever heard... period. Maybe im bias cuz this is my big cuz and he has been one of my greatest influences growing up, or maybe cuz I been a fan since day one- listenin to his peaces before he got to share them with the world. All I know is that Rodzilla is the king of this spoken word shit, hands down, he's evolved into a great poet, the best ive ever heard, im glad he waited to put this albulm together, its nuthin short of classic. Peace.

Rod is an amazing poet. He opened for Sheryl Underwood and received a much deserved standing ovation. I purchased his CD onsite and the tracks are hot. Now, I don't agree with all of his views. But I have to give it to the Brother for putting his views out there.

A GIFT TO OUR PEOPLE. THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE ROD. YOU ARE THE CHANNEL IN WHICH HE USES TO SPEAK TO US, ABOUT US, FOR US. This cd does what it says in the first poetic monologue- It will wake you the "fuck up". I saw the young man in Denver at the Kasbah on a fluke, and i have since turned his CD on to anyone and everyone. Such insight and poignance ought be played in the mainstream to detoxify the youth from psychiatric oppression and make them realize they are so much more than a fad. As a teacher of our youth, i regain faith that we strive on. Thanks.
